For over 30 years, Friends, Patrons, and supporters like you have helped The Merchant’s House thrive. Through your generous support you have played a vital role in ensuring that this remarkable building remains open, cared for, and valued.

The essential costs that keep The Merchant’s House running day to day are £8,000 a month. However, they underpin everything we do to care for the building and collections.

  £10 covers conservation materials, gloves and cleaning supplies used by volunteers
  £20 buys display board materials for our exhibitions
  £50 contributes to minor building repairs before they become major problems
  £100 covers a month of surveyor fees, helping us to ensure the building remains stable
  £200 supports servicing of essential security and fire detection systems

Every contribution, whatever its size, plays a part in keeping The Merchant’s House safe, secure, and relevant. 

With your help The Merchant’s House can continue to stand at the heart of the community, preserving its history, inspiring curiosity, and welcoming future generations through its doors.

How your donation will help

Thanks to the generosity of individuals and charitable trusts we have been able to:

  • Restore the servants’ garrets, showing where domestic staff lived and worked
  • Conserve the intricate striped pattern in the kitchen chamber – we now need funds to replicate this pattern around the room
  • Purchase a table for the dining room similar to the one listed in the 17th century inventory
  • Complete a major roof project, ensuring the building is watertight for the next 25 years.
  • Re-open the exhibition rooms with new displays and interpretation boards.
